Accelerated Reader Program
WCMS began using the Accelerated Reader program in the early 90's as a way to motivate students to read more books. At that time, students set an individual goal each year. Those students reaching or bettering their goal were awarded Reading Olympic medals at the end of the school year.
Beginning with the 2000-2001 school year, the Accelerated Reader program became a requirement of the literature classes with teachers setting the goal for each of their classes. We currently have 2,412 tests, so students have plenty of titles to choose from. A brightly-colored round sticker designates them on the library shelves. After the student has read a book, he/she then tests his or her knowledge and comprehension of the book by answering multiple-choice questions on the computer. The computer handles all scoring and record keeping automatically and presents the student with a score based on the number of correct responses, the reading level, and the length of the book.
However, if a computerized test does not exist for the book, the student meets with the librarian, Mrs. Mook, or his/her literature teacher to first have the book approved. Mrs. Mook then determines the point value of the book and has the student complete an Accelerated Reader Written Form. Blank forms are kept in the library and are also available by clicking on the A/R Written Test form link at the top of this page.
